Kate was called to the Bar in 2022, following 10 years in practice as a solicitor, most recently as Senior Associate at (then) Herbert Smith Freehills in the Employment, Safety and Industrial Relations team.

Kate’s previous legal positions include in-house Senior Legal Counsel at the Metropolitan Fire & Emergency Services Board, in-house Solicitor at the Coroners Court of Victoria, and as a Judge’s Associate to the Honourable Justice Curtain in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Kate’s practice at the Bar sees her retained predominantly in family law, work health and safety law, coronial law (inquests and inquiries) and commissions of inquiry, although Kate accepts briefs in all practice areas.

AREAS OF PRACTICE:

Family Law: Kate is retained in Family Law trials and interim hearings involving complex parenting and property matters. Kate also has experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediations, conciliation conferences and negotiations. Kate’s accepts briefs in the following areas of expertise: Parenting, Property, Child Support, Child Abduction, Independent Children’s Lawyer matters, Appellate matters, Wills & Probate and Trusts & Estates. 

Work Health & Safety Law: Kate is retained in work health and safety matters, where alleged regulatory breaches become the subject of criminal investigations and charges. Kate has advised on State and Commonwealth work health and safety matters. Kate’s practice also sees her retained in associated administrative law matters (including judicial review proceedings and regulatory cases involving internal and external review proceedings arising from decisions of regulatory bodies) and criminal prosecutions arising from work health and safety matters. 

Coronial Law and Commissions of Inquiry: Kate is retained in Coroners Court matters (inquests and inquiries) and Commissions of Inquiry. 

Administrative Law: Kate is experienced in administrative law matters, including judicial review proceedings and regulatory cases including internal and external review proceedings arising from decisions of regulatory bodies.

Criminal Law: Kate was a Judge’s Associate to the Honourable Justice Curtain in the Supreme Court of Victoria. At the time of Kate’s Associateship, the Honourable Justice Curtain was the head of the Criminal Trial Division and Chairperson of the Adult Parole Board. Kate also advises on criminal prosecutions arising from work health and safety matters.
